Hello friends!
I’ve been doing most of my blogging over on Patreon these days and just realized I have been utterly neglecting this here blog! My apologies!
I’m already 21 weeks into my second pregnancy. I’m due September 15, and I’m planning to enter maternity leave early this year, in light of the ongoing pandemic and its risks for pregnant people, along with the fact that it’s just uncomfortable to watch (let alone be) a heavily pregnant woman performing for four hours in the hot summer sun, which seems to be the standard gig offering these days.
So I’ll be playing just three more public gigs before I go into my “confinement”! You can catch me at the Downtown Windsor Farmers Market on May 14 and June 11, around 11AM both days. The market is located on Pelissier street, between University and Park. And I’ll be playing my last ticketed event, a songwriters’ circle at Phog with a bunch of my Soul City Music Co-op labelmates, on June 11. Tickets for that will be on sale soon.
The pregnancy has been both easy and difficult so far - it really depends on how I want to feel about it! Mostly, I feel very tired and a bit sad that I’m not able to do the things I used to do. It’s also a crazy time to be bringing more people into the world, with runaway climate change, the inability of working people to afford homeownership, the attacks on Roe V. Wade… I have to make a conscious effort to stop doomscrolling on Twitter or this baby is going to come out sideways.
I’ve been doing monthly writing retreats by myself at a local writing space called Gertrude’s Writing Room, located in Willistead Park. It’s been wonderful - I’ve been writing more songs for myself this year than any other, which is something I’ve been aching to do. Most of my songwriting in recent years has been custom songwriting, which is an entirely different animal from writing songs that sate my own soul. I haven’t been recording as much as I’d like, but I’m also a wife and mother and housekeeper and label manager, so there are only so many hats one can wear in a day (while making an entire human being in my body). Trying not to be too hard on myself about it! I’m doing all I can!
